The red mite tends to be more active at night and usually lies dormant during daylight hours, however in severe cases they can be noticeable even in the daytime. The red mite can create havoc in the chicken house if left untreated, severely affecting egg production, and causes discomfort and suffering to your birds. In the most severe cases, you may even lose birds as a direct result of an infestation in the chicken coop.

Chicken Coop Red Mite Prevention & Treatment
Many problems with livestock are avoided if animal husbandry is kept to a high standard . Correct feeding, watering and access to a clean well ventilated home will help keep problems to a minimum. If poultry houses are left damp and dirty, especially in the summer months, its not many days before all sorts of creatures are breeding and buzzing around in there, irritating the life of the poultry that live inside. Listed below are a few products that keep these pests under control for the well being of your poultry. Our thinking is that the cleaning of the chicken house should be an easy and enjoyable task. The time it takes to clean out is also important , especially as so many of use lead such busy lives .Firstly, you need to be able to remove certain components such as sliding floors or sliding trays, perches and nesting boxes, especially the parts that can become soiled with chicken splats. Its best if these parts remove to enable you to scrape/wash down when soiled and even pressure wash off and treat with a poultry house hygiene product for the more thorough cleaning session. In the old days, all kinds of undesirable products were used inside poultry houses as part of the anti pest routine, i certainly wouldn't recommend using any of these chemicals such as old engine oil, diesel and creosote as they are a little harsh.. These old fashioned remedies would have been poured into the cracks and applied to perches of the old poultry houses. These kind of chemicals are reported to have been quite affective, however these days there are much kinder organic alternatives. As a general rule, if you shouldn't’t apply it to your skin, don’t apply it to your chickens!
Red Mite Powder Red Mite Powder is a handy, easy to use product for controlling red mite on your birds and in poultry housing. It looks just like a white talcum powder, comes in a handy shaker form and is applied to the birds themselves, avoiding the chickens eyes, nasal and any sore areas. Be aware that when bringing in an new additions to the poultry house,its good practice to dust over the new chickens with a little re-mite powder before introducing them to the rest of the flock and the new chicken coop. Red mite powder is also useful for applying to the nesting box, poultry bedding and applying broody hens when in isolation and their chicks when they arrive. It does comply with organic rules which is comforting.
Red Mite Microshield Poultry Shield Microshield Poultry Shield is suitable for use inside the poultry house and chicken coop. Used for cleaning and treating the chicken house against red mite. For use in the building only .This product must be diluted and comes with full instructions You really need to clean out the chicken house or coop first, getting rid of any chicken splats, scraping where necessary and taking care to get into the corners and removing perches, nest boxes etc and generally leaving no stone unturned and follow by soaking the chicken house and coop with this lukewarm solution, ensuring it gets well into the corners and joints of the chicken shed. In cases of infestations, the cleaning and soaking of the chicken house in the Micro Shield Treatment must be carried out on a weekly basis and for a good few weeks to prevent further red mite eggs from hatching out. Red mite loves to live in little crooks and crannies , underneath felt in poultry housing with felt roofs and has even been know to live in the outdoor enclosure. Its important to be aware that these little nuisances can multiply at an amazing rate, females are able to produce eggs just after 3-4 days, they don’t tend to live for very long however they do reproduce very rapidly, capable of laying clutches of seven after each feed. They also have the ability to hibernate in a disused chicken house for up to 35 weeks without food , hence the importance of keeping up with control of the little devils. Felt roofing is acceptable however you must really aim to replace ever year or so in order to eradicate any red mites present. If red mites are left uncontrolled, the results could be disastrous for your chickens. The mites, grey in colour before a feast and turn red after their feed. They usually feed on your birds as they roost at night, a tell tale sign you have an infestation is that the birds will be reluctant to go into the chicken house at night , dreading the ordeal about to follow. The red mites bloodsucking will weaken your birds, chicks are more severely affected and go downhill more quickly. Remember, prevention is easier than cure.
